Bookselling
Friday, February 21st, 2003 18:59At the beginning of the month I decided to try selling some books on-line. I found some books on my shelves that were in good condition but that I don't think I'll re-read and listed them on Amazon Marketplace. I bought jiffy bags, bubble wrap, sellotape and a note book from Wilkinson's (a shop that is well known for its very low prices). I am using the note book to keep a track of the books I have listed, my outgoings on stamps and packaging materials and how much money I receive from Amazon, so that I can see whether it is worth it financially. I'm not expecting this to make my fortune, but if it doesn't make me any money, then I may as well just swap the books via Book Crossing : )
When listing the books on Amazon, I checked how much any other Marketplace copies were going for and priced mine at the lower end of the range, as people are bound to buy the cheaper copies first. I've listed 16 books so far and sold 3 of them.
Some of the books I've listed on Amazon & Book Crossing are books that I bought because I thought I ought to read them, rather than because I really wanted to. Now that I've mentally reassigned them as waiting to be sold or swapped rather than waiting to be read it feels good. No more intellectual guilt about not wanting to read a book that I think I really ought to have read, and no monetary guilt about money wasted on books that I am never going to get round to reading. It feels great : )
