Miscellany

I was an extremely restrained bibliophile last month. I didn't buy any books, not even a little one. And I didn't shop-lift any either in case you were wondering : )

Unfortunately I am very weak-willed in other departments and have started watching Big Brother 5, even though I swore I wouldn't. Those devious people at Channel 4 have lured me in with their promise of an 'Evil Big Brother'. BB1 was new and original, while BB2 had the Helen & Paul romance for added interest. I hated BB3 because it was full of loud, annoying, thick people screaming at each other, and by the time of BB4 I thought the concept had run out of steam, but I still watched it. Pathetic!

In the past month, a surprising number of cars have been driving around with mini flagpoles sticking up from the top of their windows and England flags fluttering in the breeze. Someone must really be marketing those flags hard, as the European Cup doesn't even start for another ten days. I loathe football, so I am not looking forward to wall-to-wall football on the TV, and non-stop football conversations at work (about the tournament itself and various fantasy European Cup competitions that are being run). I've got a lot of videos and DVDs that I haven't watched for ages, and a few that I've never watched, so this may be the time to catch up.

I live in one of the test regions for postal voting for everyone in this month's European elections. The pro argument says that it will increase the percentage of people who vote, while the con argument is that it is more open to electoral fraud. The cynical argument is that the government has chosen marginal areas for the test, in the hope that Labour voters who have been annoyed by the government's policies will be more likely to vote.

My ballot for the European elections arrived yesterday. I took it into work today, as you have to get someone else to witness that you are the person named on the ballot paper. The ballot paper goes into a brown envelope with the ballot paper bar code showing in the envelope's window and then both the brown envelope and the witness form go into a white envelope with the witness form bar code showing in the envelope's window. It seems like a lot more hassle than just getting up a bit earlier on the day of the election and popping round the corner to the Polling Station before work.

Question of the day:
Do you vote tactically, or do you vote for your favourite party/candidate even if they have no chance of winning?
