Miscellany
Friday, June 20th, 2003 18:36I woke up this morning and rolled over to check how long it was until my alarm would go off, only to see that it was 07:45 already. I must have turned my alarm clock off either when I was resetting it, or when I was changing the radio station. This was a right pain, as there was no question of being able to skip my shower this morning, even if it made me miss the bus. I really should have washed my hair too but I definitely didn't have time for that. The shower started screaming and spluttering as it does when there's air trapped in the
pipes, but I just turned it to maximum, muttering ''Don't you dare stop working and leave me here covered in bubbles when I'm in such a hurry" and it recovered. I made it out of the house by 08:05, in time to go to Boots on the way to the bus, but I'm having a very bad hair day. It's somehow managing to be oily but very dry underneath at the same time, which means it is hanging oddly and it's 10 days till I'm having it dyed, so I have obviously greying roots.
I had my ears syringed today, which was a big relief as I can now hear again. The nurse said that as well as having 'diddy' ears, I also have very narrow ear canals.
On leaving the surgery, I caught a bus into town, which was peripherally involved in an accident and had two near misses in a 15 minute bus ride. Firstly, we were going over a mini-roundabout when a car pulled onto the roundabout in front of the bus, missing us by about six inches. Much beeping of horns ensued.
In the second incident, we stopped at the bus stop just before the cricket ground, and a bus from another company overtook us, and clipped a car coming out from a side road (hard enough to break the headlight and damage the wing). Now this was the car's fault, as the driver shouldn't have pulled out when the road wasn't clear, but the bus that hit it didn't even stop! I'm sure that the driver or his passengers must have felt the bump, and it made a loud enough noise that everyone on my bus jumped. I've just been to the bus company website and sent them an e-mail about it.
The third event was just before my stop. A woman walked out in front of the bus without looking and had to jump out of the way when the driver braked and blew the horn.
All the bookshops in town are busy putting out Harry Potter stands, banners and posters ready for the new book which is coming out tomorrow. Waterstone's is opening at 7 am for the early birds.
I'm currently reading "Tea with the Black Dragon" by R. A. MacAvoy, but I am undecided about what to go for next. So here are some ideas:
* "The Difference Engine" - William Gibson & Bruce Sterling
* "The Rough Guide to Unexplained Phenomena"
* a couple of books about the Great Game that my father gave me
* "The Alexiad of Anna Comnena"
* "Le Morte D'Arthur" by Thomas Malory
