Yesterday, I saw one of the kingfishers in the stream next to the building in which I work. I was going up the back staircase, and saw it dive into the stream out of the corner of my eye. So I stopped and saw it fly out of the stream and sit on a branch for about 30 seconds before flying away. The woodpecker was also around, on the trunk of one of the bigger trees on the other side of the stream. I think I've only seen him once before.

There are two kingfishers in that stream and I've seen them a couple of times before from the side windows but the stream isn't so close there, so they were just little turquoise blobs, flashing orange when they turned. Yesterday's sighting was much better - I could see the kingfisher quite clearly. The bird-watching opportunities at work are much better in the winter and early spring, as there's so much foliage on the trees in the summer that you can never see the king-fishers or woodpeckers, although the magpies are always bouncing about in the tree-tops and on the lawn and the herons are big enough to see easily whenever they are stalking up and down the stream or flying back to their favourite perch on the sluice-gate wall in the river by Wilford Church.
