This is the third book I've read recently (the others being "Snow Crash" and "The Paper Eater") where big business has more or less taken over running the world and the power of government has shrunk correspondingly. In this book, the major corporations are associated with two loyalty schemes, each of which is keen to suppress both the rival scheme and the remaining powers of the government.
I've always been a bit of a dystopia fan, so this book was right up my street.
