kittiwakeJoachim gazed in to a picture of a toyshop. Among all the toys and the people were a little lamb and a small girl, but he couldn't look at the picture in detail, for just as he opened the door something fell out on to his bed. He bent down and picked it up.
It was a thin sheet of paper, folded over and over. When he had smoothed it out he saw that there was writing on both sides. So he read what was on the paper.
When Joachim and his father go looking for an Advent calendar on the last day of November, they end up with one that a mysterious flower seller has left in a local bookshop. Every day when Joachim opens the day's window, a piece of folded paper falls out, telling a chapter of a story about a little girl called Elisabet and her pilgrimage across Europe and the Middle East to Bethlehem, to be present on the night of the nativity.
The book is divided into 24 chapters, one for each window of the Advent Calendar, so if you are going to read it during Advent, you can read each chapter on the right day.
