I've only ever seen a hare once, while on a botany field trip at university to look at trees. We were walking up towards the woods and saw a hare bounding over the hillside.
Now that was over 15 years ago and I've always wondered about the hare as its coat was definitely mottled, not plain brown like a wild rabbit, but it's taken my sudden and unexpected decision to write a poem about a hare to get me to investigate further.
According to Google there are two types of hare in the UK, brown hares and blue hares aka mountain hares. Blue hares have a white coat in winter. Neither of them looks particularly mottled in the pictures I've found on the web. Although there are some mountain hares in Wales, it seems more likely that I saw a brown hare, as they are lean with long ears, while the blue hares are more rounded shape with shorter ears.
I also wondered where hares spend the winter since they don't have burrows like rabbits, and apparently they often take shelter in woodland.
