There are two prime causes of my love of red hair. Firstly, my great-aunt Hetty (natural brunette), had always wanted red hair her whole life. When I knew her she was already old and wore an auburn wig instead of the grey wigs of her sister and all their contemporaries. My mother says, that Hetty had to wait until her mother was dead before she could start dyeing her hair .
Secondly, I would have to blame Anne Shirley. Now I'm well aware she hated her hair when she was young and once accidentally dyed it green in a failed attempt to achieve raven locks, but when I was little there was a TV adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables" starring Kim Braden as Anne & Jan Francis as Diana. I thought Kim Braden had beautiful hair and deeply
regretted my own mousy brown locks.
When I started work I had my hair permed a few times, but after a while decided that I'd rather be red than dead curly. And ever since then, it's been various shades of red: copper, chestnut, dark red, bright orangey red think "Run Lola Run"), very dark purple (almost black) with red streaks, black with red & copper streaks, dark brown with copper streaks, black on top with red underneath, etc., etc.. It's currently dark red, but I'm having it dyed again in ten days and I think I'm going to go copper for the summer. But then again, maybe my hairdresser will have something else in mind. My hairdresser loves me, as although I don't go in for extreme cuts, when it comes to the colour I'm not afraid to experiment.
