For some reason the company I work for decided to re-brand the Sports & Social Club. Last month the members were asked to complete a questionnaire about the that they said would help to 'shape the future of the Club' and allow the Sports & Social Club committee to "strategically plan events around members' needs and desires". They bribed us to return the questionnaire by promising to send us three free gifts and the chance to win £300. I didn't win the money, but the gifts have just arrived. They turned out to be a white duffel bag, a sports water bottle and a frisbee, all carrying the new logo of the club. I've never been keen on playing frisbee, but I can use the water bottle at the gym and the duffel bag will come in
handy for carrying my swimming kit, as it's quite big but made of light-weight material. Of course, there's always the possibility that people will see the company name and start bending my ear about their credit files, but I'll take the risk.

I have never done a themed release of a book before, but on Sunday I left two books at the gym, both themed by title rather than subject matter. I left "The Looking-Glass War", a John Le Carre spy story, by the mirrors in the changing room and "The Girls of Slender Means" by Muriel Spark on the table by the sofas where people can have a rest after too much exercise. "The Looking-Glass War was still there when I left, but "The Girls of Slender Means" had disappeared, so maybe I'll be lucky this time and someone will add a journal entry for one of my wild releases. I'm always worried that the books end up in lost property or are thrown out as rubbish.

For my birthday I received a total of £60 of Amazon vouchers. As I have such a huge TBR pile already, I decided not to spend the whole lot on books. So I have ordered 4 books, one language course & one CD, all of which were on my Amazon wish-list except for the CD. And I've still got a whole £1.05 of my vouchers left!

This is what I've ordered:
"Viking Age Iceland" by Jesse Byock - history
"Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain" by Ronald Hutton - history/mythology
"The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason - personal finance
"Cheap Date:Antidotal and Anti-Fashion for a Secondhand State of Mind" by Kira Joliffe - ethical consumerism
"Spanish Vocabulary Builder" from the Michel Thomas Series - language learning CDs
"Laundry Service" by Shakira - music CD

I can't wait for the parcel to arrive!
