[livejournal.com profile] kangaroo is compiling a list of the BKUKers favourite books of the year. So we have all been posting our top 10, plus any highly commendeds and our least favourite books. Luckily, she will allow us to amend them later if we read anything better before the end of December.

So I posted my provisional Top 10 list, and then of course realised it was a Top 11 and had to decide which one to remove. I decided against listing any highly commendeds because that list could have got ridiculously long. In order to help myself cut the list down to 10, I only allowed myself one book by each author and I didn't included any re-reads (well I have read Beowulf before, but not Seamus Heaney's version). The list is in the order I read them, but my favourite book this year, by a long long way, has to be Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban.

A Time of Gifts - Patrick Leigh Fermor
Beowulf - Anonymous (tr. Seamus Heaney)
Riddley Walker - Russell Hoban
Fairy Paths and Spirit Roads - Paul Devereux
Silk - Alessandro Baricco
Marabou Stork Nightmares - Irvine Welsh
Barney's Version - Mordecai Richler
Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons
The Songlines - Bruce Chatwin
Sleeping in Flame - Jonathan Carroll

I gave the Wooden Spoon to two books. I expected that Cradle by Arthur C Clarke would lose hands down, since I gave up on page 58, but when I checked my "this is utter crap, I give up" journal entry, I found that it was dated 31/12/2003 so it just missed out on eligibility.

Bite - Richard Laymon (a very annoying horror story, as the characters just messed around and weren't anything like scared enough for the situations they found themselves in)
Surfacing - Margaret Atwood (just boring - I'm not an Atwood fan)
