My new credit card arrived today. 0% APR on balance transfers and purchases for the next 10 months. When I rang up to activate it I asked for the exact date that the 0% rate runs out, so that I can be sure to pay it off in time.

This week I got another credit card offer in the post, for a sub-prime card that will give you a massive credit limit of £500 and charge you 44% APR for the privilege. I don't think that I'll be taking them up on their oh so kind offer!

Perhaps I should ring them up, tell them that the targeting for their marketing campaign is totally wrong and suggest that they use the company I work for instead : )

Day-dreaming

My 'running away to a new life abroad' day-dreams have a new location. "Get a New Life" is a BBC2 show in which professional relocators help families to move abroad. In the latest programme, a family from Yorkshire moved to Canada, to a small town half-an-hour's drive from Calgary.

PS: Finally a post I can use the 'quixotic' mood for.

There are 50 I've definitely seen (in bold), and 4 maybes (in italics). This was quite a hard meme for me, as I've done a lot of film evening classes. So I've seen clips from a lot of these films, but I've done my best to remember which of them I've seen all the way through.

Family time

My brother and his family are up from London this weekend, so I went over to my parents' house yesterday and today to see them. It's the first time I've seen my 3-month-old niece, and my 2.5-year-old nephew is talking in full sentences now! He is sometimes a bit garbled, but on the whole you can understand him.

He had fun pretending to water us all with the garden hose, and told us that it was broken because it hadn't got any batteries in it (really it's the garden tap that is broken). Then when we were sitting indoors he said, "I'm going to be pretending now. That shadow on the wall is a space rocket." When we said we couldn't see a shadow he said that it had zoomed away. So he's obviously a science-fiction fan in the making. My brother got a box of his old geological samples out of the garage to show to my nephew and gave him a coprolite (fossilised faeces).

The cooking was more awkward than usual for my mother. My aunt has coeliac disease so she can't have gluten and my brother is a vegetarian. On top of that, my sister-in-law's doctor has told her that while she is breast-feeding my niece she should avoid eating all the things my nephew is allergic to. They don't know that it will stop her from developing the same allergies, but it's worth trying.
